I like em all. Probably not the fungus one because it’s too similar to a SF horror novella I wrote. Lighthouse in my wip so that’s probably not going to be my choice either.

I’m thinking the chains… we’ll see. I’m hungover from Friday wineday so any decision is jaded atm :)

ETA: the dawn/sunset one makes me think of The Hills Have Eyes. So no pastoral at all.

Wow i'm surprised by all the lighthouse votes. Thought it would be closer.
I voted fungus, mainly because my WiP is about fantasy mushrooms and I want to harvest all your ideas.

Honestly, I'd be very happy to write a story from any of these fine pics. Kind of sad to think of the ones that won't be written because only one of the four can be chosen.
I won't think about story ideas till the first, so I'll see everyone there!

Strangely enough (it's strange, even to me), the "sunset" image reminded me of the end of the last scene (and some previous scenes) of season one of Game of Thrones, specifically of the place where Daenerys and the Dothraki camped in a hilly area above a desert that stretches into the distance.

These scenes were filmed in Malta, which is somewhat lacking in large areas of desert. In fact, they were filmed on the coast and the "desert" was superimposed on what was, in reality, the Mediterranean Sea.

I was wondering, is there any clues in the photo to show that D is the sun setting, rather than rising?

And without the title, I wouldn't have even guessed that B was a lighthouse. Looks more like a keep or a watchtower to me, with its secrets, and signs, and mysterious goings on.

I've chosen D though. I think the last Challenge we had was quite fungus-related, and I can't really make head nor tail of C.

Yeah, my first thought for D was vampire movies, not a picturesque pastoral scene.

The story doesn't have to be about a lighthouse, whether at sea or anywhere else! It can be a metaphorical one -- a building such as in Carol Berg's Lighthouse duology, which contains knowledge and is seen to be a light to the world.

Or you could interpret the building as being something else -- a tower, or a minaret, or a palace.

Even if you keep it as a lighthouse, it doesn't need to feature as a building as such -- it could be an image on someone's wall, or a clip in a film, or a report in a newspaper.

And there are rocks in the photo and clouds -- they could form the crux of the story.

Use the image as a spark for the imagination, not as a cage!
