Short story. 60s or 70s (?)
Aliens arrive on Earth. Teleport to visit people. Give us fantastic technology...ray guns, total conversion gigaton bombs, antigravity, etc. etc.
After we have spread the technology around an alien teleports to an Earthling in a duck blind hunting ducks and asks what he is doing, and hunter explains. Alien mentions that they have a little surprise for Earth in a few minutes. A duck lands on the water and sits there. Alien asks why the hunter does not shoot the duck.
Hunter: We don't shoot sitting ducks.
Alien: Another thing we have in common. Neither do we!

Rats! I've read this - in the last couple of years too.

Sitting Duck by Daniel F. Galouye? EDIT: I was wrong It isn't.

As I remember the story the aliens' fleet is just about to enter the solar system and the brand spanking new Earth fleet is going out to meet them as a gesture of friendly greeting.

Blast you, SurrealSisyphus! :)
When I clicked on the title that you made a link, I was sure I would get to reread the story, but it just told me about Pohl.
You should have made his name a link.

We can’t always have things handed to us on a plate, Tom. ;)

Try Googling the name of the story, now someone has kindly found it for you!

As the story has been found, and links posted, I've locked the thread.
