I am trying to find an old (fifties, I presume) novel in which an American family is transported in the future by an atomic explosion, to find the world dominated by black (cannibal) people.

I found that book really unpleasant. I normally quite like Heinlein despite his peculiarities, but FF left a bad taste.

This is probably the only one of his I don't go back and re-read.
Though at one time Starship Troopers was another I didn't re-read. (I was tempted when the movies came out.)

I recollect a sci-fi book though the details I remember are scant. Something about a guy who lives for a very long time, a 1000 years or something, and somehow goes back in time and has sex with his mother. I thought that was a Heinlein book, too, though I accept my memory might by incorrect. Was it "Time Enough for Love"? Not a book I enjoyed!

The Heinlein character was Lazarus Long, 'patriarch' of the Howard families...

The Howard families were a group that was breeding for longevity-- I don't remember the exact numbers, but you could be a member if your 4 grandparents lived to at least 90 years old... the thought was that if you mix and match people with long-lived ancestors their offspring would live to a ripe old age! Not really a -bad- idea...

The Day After Tomorrow (aka Sixth Column) is a bit heavy-handed with the Asian racial stereotypes. (Understandable to a point as the USA was at war with Japan when he wrote it. But hard to read these days.) Personally I find his books very avoidable. I loved him when I was kid - got my Sense of Wonder going - but apart from a few earlier short stories I find it seriously hard work not to throw stuff I've reread by him in the bin. As for the Number of the Beast, I couldn't get that onto eBay fast enough.

Incest. One of Heinlein's 'themes'. His story - All You Zombies - has a character going back in time and meeting himself before he had a sex change and fathered a child who grew up to be... himself. Made into the rather good Predestination with Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook playing the central roll. I can recommend it.
