In the profile posts OuttaInc posted a link to Snap Judgements, a series of videos where a 250-word submission gets critiqued by a group of editors.

However, following the link through to Apex Magazine, I noticed a number of free short stories published there:

You can see the most popular ones in a widget on the bottom right navigation column.

Last night I read Mr Death by Alix E Harrow and thought it was the best short story I've read in years - though to be fair I don't read many. I loved the voice, the content, and the snapshots of humanity that help make the story.

Looks like a place worth revisiting, so thought I'd start a thread for anyone else who might want to dip into their short fiction. :)

I can’t believe I missed this thread when you posted it!

To close the loop on your recommendation, I listened to Mr. Death (Apex offers a narrated version as well as text) and I thought it was beautiful.

Apex is my new favorite e-zine. They’re dark SF/F and they make all their content avail for free online. The writing is top notch but they also offer a ton of material for prospective writers, mainly in the form of Q&A’s with their editors, slush readers, and featured authors. The Snap Judgement series is brilliant.

Definitely worth a visit.

I'd presumed Apex was just another small indie publishing unknown names - but when I searched Amazon for Alix E Harrow to find more of her work, I discovered she's actually a best selling author! Shows how much I know!
