The World Meteorological Organization is setting up an expert committee to evaluate whether tropical cyclone Freddy has broken the record as the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record. It has been a named tropical cyclone for 33 days, crossed the entire South Indian Ocean and travelled nearly 10,000 kilometers. The accumulated cyclone energy (index used to measure the energy) is the equivalent of an average full North Atlantic hurricane season. Mozambique has received more than a year's worth of rainfall in the past month, and Madagascar got three times the monthly average in the space of a week. There are major socio economic and humanitarian impacts but accurate early warnings and early action has limited casualties. According to the latest forecast from WMO’s Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre La Réunion (Meteo-France), Freddy may make landfall in northern Mozambique in of the province of Zambezia late evening on 10 March or early 11 March, bringing dangerous winds, storm surge and extreme rainfall.
