I tried googling for some time, but can’t find this story. I read it in the late 80s, when I read every SF Anthology I could find in our local library. So the story itself might be older.
It’s about a planet with regular extreme climate changes (every 1000 years or so) and 2 species that respectively take over. The story takes place right at the time of change, when the actual „ruling“ species prepares for their time of hibernating. I think in the ocean. I’m not quite sure if I’m mixing two plots, but it was definitely a short story, and not Helliconia (which I never read). The 2 species never meet, I think, but my memories are really blurry.
