That is very cool! I've ground my own lenses out of glass before, but we used to say, 'A lens is a lens' no matter its material.

Pretty amazing but is this something ancient people were aware of or do you need modern technology to figure something like this out?

Fire starting - don't know if I've mentioned this anecdote before in Chrons, many years ago I was coming out of a beach cafe at the seaside village of St Bees.

There was some kind of mass boy scout meeting (Jamboree?) going on in the village proper and troops of scouts were wandering all around the beach area.

As my pal and I exited the cafe there was a middle aged scoutmaster standing there with an unlit cigarette.
"Has either of you got a light please?"
Quick as a flash he got the reply"No mate, but there's two sticks laying over there"
