Major figure in the SF scene, lovely guy, prolifically published and highly respected. What a shock. Many authors will be mourning him.

I realise this says much more about my ignorance than his talents or fame, but I’ve not heard of him. What sort of SF did he write and what is most recommended?

Eric was greatly liked and admired in the SF community, both for his novels (of which the Helix series is highly thought of) and for his generosity, geniality and kindness. His novels are often about human/alien interaction. He also wrote non genre novels. The novels he wrote with Keith Brooke, including those published recently by PS Publishing, are also critically lauded. He will be missed by many.

I met him once, and had a little online contact. He was the Guardian's SF reviewer for many years, and reviewed four of my novels. Keith Brooke told me he was a big fan of my work. My memory from meeting him in London at a Newcon Press event was just how easy to chat with he was. Very genial. Nobody has a bad word to say about him. And 62... seems so young in this day and age.
