Creatures and beings of myth and fantasy

The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges has some good ones. The Catoblepas, a beast with an oversized head and a lethal gaze, but fortunately its neck is too weak to lift its head and look at you. The Chonchon, which resemble a severed head that flies around on its huge flapping ears, and is also a wizard.
