Think of a HUD but like displayed virtually on the inside of the forehead. Like a signal comes in and the mind turns it into a visual representation. Can't tink of an abbreviation or short term for this. Tried M-Comm, IHD, don't seem to ring though. Thanks for any ideas.

CD for Cortex Display
BUD -- Brain's Up Display
MF --- Mind Flash
MAD --- Mental Answers Display

There's a few off the top of my head.

Would something like that get turned into shorthand by humans (or a similar alien species) pretty quick and end up being called something like a 'blinkie'? 'Hang on, I'm getting a 'blink.' 'What's up Foloffenabum?', 'he's on the blink again'. etc.
(Apologies, prob as usefull as a handbrake in a Canoe to you story;)

I was going to suggest 'Overlay' then saw @msstice post telling us that it has already been used, so I think it is the one run with. (y)
You will need to introduce it with descriptive context initially, or it might confuse the reader.

Personally I wouldn't over-complicate it. A HUD is a HUD, however it manifests itself. An alternative could be V-HUD (as in Virtual HUD). If you want to try something different, perhaps:

Virtual Augmented Display
Mental Augmented Display

Virtual Enhanced Display
Mental Enhanced Display

Your description makes me think of the third eye or Ajna Chakra from Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. It is also located in the centre of the forehead.
So maybe Ajna

Invent whatever you wish. The trick isn't in the inventing, it's in the selling--in getting the reader to buy it.

So, at first you use the full name plus explanation. It can be something as simple as narrator talking to reader, character to another character, or maybe the character is talking to his dog. Doesn't matter. Make subsequent references, but you incorporate the word or abbreviation, whatever you've chosen. So, with that in mind (you know, the part that displays on the inside of the forehead), all the above suggestions are potentially good ones.

It should be used often enough to justify. If it only gets mentioned once or twice, a description is sufficient.

MUD == Mind Up Display
BUD == Brain Up Display
BID == Brain Insertion Display
TV == Terminator Vision
AV == Arnold Vision

I :love: the idea of the Windows Ajna versus the Apple iBrow ideas, totally incompatitble with each other, and therefore sending the user's mind on the blink, but there must be some open source software too, called something mundane like HeadSpace. And then Google would come in with it's own version, called Google Unchained. (They've already had products that failed called Google Buzz and Google Nexus.)

I know it's already been used by a phone company, but for the TV advert you'd need to play:

Wih the strapline, "The Writing's on the Wall."

If that could be worked into an acronym - AJNA - Augmented Judgement Neural Awareness. Although that is really forced.

The problem is that most folks would know it as Third Eye so why not 3i, 3RDi or Thirdi.

VTFS
Robotech had the Pupil Pistol.
The Pupil Pistol, also known as the Nichols's Special Vision Track Firing System (VTFS).
Though this is really an input device. Just wanted to give a shoutout to 40 year old anime.
