An odd tidbit about an exotic Malaysian plant from Paul Theroux's Sunrise With Seamonsters which Chroners might find interesting. Sorry for the sloppy photo, I didn't want to retype it. It begins in the upper right with the words "My favourite":

I looked up an image of this plant . Very strange looking indeed !

It kind of brings to mind a very old 1967 horror film The Maneater of Hydra.

Also known as the Indian Trumpet Tree. I have a dried seed pod somewhere that my father bought back from India, where it is common. Imagine a stretched flattish pea pod 18 inches long, brown and woody. I used it as a rattle and as a pretend sword when I was a young child.
