I recall being hooked on a series where the main character may have been a mathematician or librarian who searches for artifacts from defunct alien civilizations, by taking a personal-ish small spacecraft. I seem to think the author was male and might have passed away in the past 20 years. This series has a very similar feel to Jack McDevitt’s stories about Alex and Gabe who are collectors/dealers of such artifacts, and I was very sad when the author died because no more stories would be written with those characters whom I grew to like very much.
