DISCUSSION THREAD -- JULY 2023 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge

Wow 8 votes? That's the most i've ever got. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me and mentioned me. And also to everyone who completed a story, I always have a great morning when I get to sit down to read them all. And of course to Victoria and Parson who pump life into the discussion thread with their well thought out reviews.

And congrats/condolences to The Judge. It's hard to get 7 votes and not win.

Congrats @therapist! I really enjoyed your story

Thanks for your kind words. Funnily enough I was thinking of your werewolf story as I was writing it. I always liked that story's simple effectiveness, with its clear and resonant theme.

And speaking of theme. I was so focused on trying to adhere to gaslamp fantasy, that I completely forgot there was a theme this month. Which is why my story isn't really about 'risk' but about 'self-love'. Unfortunately there's no magic potion for it in our world and its something we must work at.

I'll see you all again in the 350 word challenge discussion!

Congratulations, therapist!

Thanks again everyone who mentioned or voted for me -- I was gobsmacked on looking at the poll to see I'd got so many votes. My first idea was knocked on its head when I read paranoid marvin's story which was very much in the same territory, so then I moved onto the street lamplighter idea but really struggled to get it to gel. Even when I'd finally got the basics down to 75 words I wasn't happy because of the major plot hole in it. Just goes to show how difficult it is to assess one's own work against the readership's likes/dislikes!

Congratulations therapist, and it's not really commiserations for The Judge when you score an awesome 7 votes for second place. Therapist I think you did hit the theme, because 'love' can sometimes be the greatest risk of all.

A big well done to everyone who entered this month's Challenge, knowing that it was probably outside many of our comfort zones; but it would hardly be a Challenge if it was easy.

I don't expect to win anytime soon. My stories generally fail to include the necessary ingredients to win a 75-worder; humour, a tug at the heartstrings or an unexpected twist at the end. Simply not my strong-point. That's fine, letting go of those ambitions freed me to write the stories that Theme and Genre evoke in me. In other words, to concentrate on the Challenge.
This month's entry was a prime example of that, I think. Not a winner, but a story I was content with. I wasn't sure my amateurish attempt at a contemporary tone was convincing, though. I was therefor pleasantly surprised and grateful when it did get two mentions.
Thank you @StilLearning and @The Judge!

Congrats @therapist :)

Thanks to @Elckerlyc @AnRoinnUltra and @therapist for the votes, plus the mentions folks.

The first thing that came to mind with the theme was the game, the second the Napoleonic Wars. A swift check on the date range for genre showed I was fine. Then just a mad dash to write in case anyone else came up with the idea.

Oh you're very welcome! I didn't think of the connection until you mentioned it. If only there were potions out there to help us with all our inner demons! Well, I think you did a bang up job with keeping it simple/clear and having a strong theme to boot. Congrats again!

Well done Therapist and well deserved.

If I had more then one vote Judge would have had my second vote, but rules are rules. I imagine Judge would be a stickler for rules too.

In a close run third place was Ursa Major with a late vote for me, which is greatly appreciated. Just to check, I don't have to be nice to you or anything now?

Lots of mentions which is cool. I had a good last line, but I was in the predictable middle lane with the Ripper and when measured against the winners. There's always next month with victory a whisker away once again.
