Hi Everyone,

This is a horror/sci-fi novel that I started to read many years ago, but never actually finished. I would love to find it again and finish it. I would guess it was written in the 80s or early 90s and I remember there was an X-Files episode that had a similar theme. The book was about these creatures, that I am sure were aliens, that looked a lot like maggots but were about a 6 - 12 inches long. They would find a human host and, once they bit/connected with you, they had the ability to make you feel pleasure. They burrowed under the skin and travelled to the base of the skull where they (I think?) could communicate directly with you, and then gave you intense pleasure for doing violent or evil things.

Anyone else come across this book ?

Thanks !!!

Sounds like a remake of Heinlein's book "The Puppet Masters." Creatures latch on to humans, usually riding between the shoulder blades, and try to take over civilization.
.
Not to be confused with the Star Trek (original series) episode "Operation -- Annihilate!" where creatures, much like the Puppet Masters creatures, latch on to humans in an attempt to take over.
.
Not to be confused with the Babylon 5 episode "Exogenesis," where centipede-like creatures snuggled onto the spines/brain stems of selected hosts. These were generally beneficial parasites, that were the remains of a long-dead civilization, and contained the memories of their race.
.
Not to be confused with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Conspiracy" with centipede-like creatures taking over Star Fleet headquarters.
Nor the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Host." more or less non-violent parasites...

Alien maggot-like critters that burrow into people and make them do terrible things that result in unleashing pleasure in the infected’s brains?

That sounds just like The JimJams by Michael Green (1994).

I don’t really need to describe it more, just look at the cover below and if that doesn’t ring a bell then it’s certainly a different book.

Thanks for the reply - I looked up the Jim Jams and I don't think that's it. Thanks for replying though - much appreciated.

There is one scene in the book that really stands out in my memory, in fact it's the only bit of the book I remember. A character in the book, quite early on, ends up handcuffed to the bar on the floor of an old or disused saloon. I think he was a reporter who was investigating the strange occurrences. He sees one of these things and panics, having never seen anything like it before, but he is trapped and cannot get away. Being on the floor, as it comes closer, he lifts his leg to try to stamp down on it to keep it away, but the 2nd or 3rd time he does this, whilst his leg is up, it shoots forward at incredible speed and bites/latches on to the back of his thigh. The moment it does he feels immense pleasure and affection / tenderness for the creature and strokes and caresses it as it burrows into him, travelling under the skin up his back to finally rest along his spine at the base of his skull. Once there it communicates directly to him and begins to encourage him to commit acts of violence for more intense pleasure.

OK. We’re getting closer.

How about Richard Laymon’s Flesh (1987).

There is a lot that fits - namely a wormlike parasite that burrows into people, attaches to spine, and controls and gives pleasure when they do bad things.

Goodreads: “A trashy 80's slasher flick rendered in prose, Laymon's Flesh threatens a variety of lusty college students with a species of Aztec worm that burrows under the skin of misogynistic men, attaches itself to the length of the victim's spine, plants a toothy sucker directly to the brain and then proceeds to coach its new host through acts of sadism and cannibalism.”

I concur with @CassFrank

Here's an excerpt from Flesh that matches the memory of the guy at the bar trying to stamp on it:-

" He kicked down hard with his right heel, but missed the thing and flung his leg high again.
It didn’t try to leap for his upraised foot. Instead, it darted forward and hit the back of his leg just to the right of his groin.
Roland’s throat constricted, ready to emit a cry of agony and horror.
But he felt no pain.
Only a hot, tingling pressure that sent a delicious shiver through his body."
