I know there's a book by Leslie Thomas titled "The adventures of Goodnight and Loving", this is NOT the book I'm trying to find.
The one I'm after was read about 1980 but set in the 1950s/1960s (maybe even written back then!)
There was a hardened seaman called Goodnight who ended up in a seedy part of London, after a brutal fight with a pimp he finds himself running a vice girl.
He has a bit of low level love for her (and occasionally sleeps with her) but keeps her working the streets because she's very good at her role
and pulls in a lot of income for him.
However a tough local vice cop, Detective Loving, also has the hots for her and the two men are constantly engaged in a battle of wits, trying to outfox each other .
Nothing like the Leslie Thomas story, I remember reading that also a few years later and pondering the identical name coincidence.
