Shows and movies that are live action because based upon an anime have usually (in my experience, in my humble opinion) been terrible. Bad CGI, bad acting, bad costumes, bad adaptation of the original stories. That's why, after giving the new One Piece live action a shot, I want to emphasize how impressed I am.

I may be alone. I haven't read any other reviewers yet. Sometimes I absolutely love movies or tv shows that get pounded by professional or regular people reviewers on rotten tomatoes. Most often, I'm in disagreement with the pros and agreement with the regular joes.

I'm not going to insert any spoilers.

To be honest, I only watched maybe the first twelve or so episodes of the anime, and then got bored with it. To the best of my memory, the story holds up to the original fairly well, with of course some surprises. This show has captured my attention so that I cannot help but keep watching until the 8th episode.

My main disappointment is that one of the characters looks radically different from in the anime, to the point of no longer looking unique, despite that most of the characters are really great in terms of makeup / wardrobe.

Edit: just read the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and it looks like everyone agrees with me for once.

I've watched the first six episodes, aiming to finish the season tomorrow.

I came to this cold except for knowing the basic idea and Luffy's character design. I like almost everything about it, except that I feel it hasn't really developed from the opening; there isn't a strong through-line for the first season, and it seems very episodic. That's my only real criticism, however: the design work is amazing, the characters are good, and it's very entertaining. The YouTube reviews I've seen say much the same thing. Given the horror of previous live-action anime adaptations, especially Netflix's execrable (I love that word) Fullmetal Alchemist, it is nothing short of a miracle.

I watched to the end, and it didn't disappoint.

The one thing about the show that came to mind directly echoed by the reviews I later read: it has a lot of heart.

It was a pleasant enough watch. I don't see it being something I'll get massively attached to the way I did the original manga, but it is legitimately pretty enjoyable.

This puts it miles above every other live-action adaptation of anime I have ever seen.

Though it want; a ba bad film , I was disappointed by the live action 2009 adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato They changed too many things.

I bailed part way through ep7. I think, for me, there just isn't enough substance to it. The world is (deliberately) near-nonsense, which means there can't be any serious intrigue. And though I like the characters, I don't like them enough to really care about them, and their motivations are either vague or not that interesting. I found the first two episodes the best, because they were so fresh, but it never really developed from that. So, good effort in many ways, but not for me.

I was wrong. I went back to it, and it immediately got better and was very entertaining (and sometimes moving) until the end. I think maybe I'd just watched too many episodes in short succession and the start of E7 was a bit uninspired.

They're also doing a live action versions of Yu Yu Hakusho

I would love to see a live action adaptation of Inuyasha.
