I know I've read this several times, but I can't convince Google to tell me what it is. It was, of course, in a collection. First read it decades ago.
The basic plot, as best as I can remember:
- some statistician or similar notices that a large number of natural cycles of different lengths all coincide at a date a few days in the future
- story ends at that day, protagonist walks over a hill before sunrise, horizon gets brighter ... and brighter ... and brighter ... (presumably, sun has gone nova)
