I got bored at work, so I asked Chat GPT if it knew any text based RPG games. It said no, but asked me if I wanted to play one with it and said if I gave it a setting, character names, rules etc, it would create one for me. I spent 12 hours playing it's game, going through a single player RPG with the AI. It was pretty fun and nice to pass the time. I was pleasantly surprised by it's ability to create new and interesting situations and how it adapted the the D&D world I had asked it to create.

What was your prompt? When I asked it to create a simple RPG set in a city, it spit out essentially the entire game, so there were no surprises -- like so:

The Adventure Begins

Scene 1: The Mysterious Letter

You open the letter and read:"Detective Alex, the Crystal of Eternity has been stolen from the Metro City Museum. It's hidden somewhere in the city. You have until midnight to find it. Start your search at the Old Town Library."

  • Option 1: Go to the Old Town Library.
  • Option 2: Ignore the letter and continue with your day.

If you choose Option 1:

You arrive at the Old Town Library, a place filled with ancient books and a peculiar atmosphere. You notice an old librarian who seems to be expecting you.

  • Option 1: Talk to the librarian.
  • Option 2: Search the library quietly

Hold on, it said that it doesn't know any but then goes on to create one for you? How did it do that? I think it's hiding something from you...

That's exactly what I thought! I can name at least a couple off the top of my head, so why what is essentially a huge computer database can't...

I think it just wanted to play a game with you.

Don't bother with Chat GPT, you want AI Dungeon for this sort of thing. Entirely created for text-based adventures. You can create your own, writing all the background info in a separate bit that the AI can use as reference, or there are loads already set up by other people that you can have a go in.
