(Found) Can you help?

I'm searching the name for a particular science fiction film and it is a bit of a challenge for me but maybe not for the most knowledgeable.
So I would very much appreciate it if someone could help me.
Here we go...
The film begins with a scene of a man sitting out on his porch in a countryside wooden cabin in the US. He then takes his son (I think) in his car to a piece of high tech equipment.
Sorry, but that's all I remember. So, does anyone know this film?
