New year, new month, new 75-word Challenge, brought to you by last month's winner, M. Robert Gibson (just the Challenge theme/genre, not the whole year -- nobody wants THAT kind of responsibility!) -- we present:

Theme: Beginnings
Genre:
Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror

Challenge thread here:
JANUARY 2024 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge -- READ FIRST POST!

Good luck to one and all!

Considering how much writers struggle with beginnings, this could be a very fruitful and creative month - lots of real world experience to draw on. Excellent choice @M. Robert Gibson - and it looks like @Guttersnipe thinks it’s a hot topic too!

Quick question: does a ghost story automatically count as fantasy or horror? I just finished reading “A Delicious Life, Briefly” which reads more like a comedy of manners at times.

Hi folks, I got here as soon as I could after last night's shenanigans :giggle: so thanks to @TheDustyZebra for doing the threads (y)

As to the theme, I thought, since it's a new year, it's a time for fresh starts and keep the genre fairly straightforward.

Who knew winning was so stressful? Certainly not me, since that was my first win in nearly six years of trying.

That is all

Happy New Year

Ghosts are supernatural; supernatural is a sub-genre of fantasy. So (in my opinion) I would class a story with a ghost (if it isn't intended to be frightening) as fantasy rather than horror.

I got my tale in this early because I thought it was a pretty obvious take on the theme and genres, and wanted to get it in before anybody else submitted theirs.

@Guttersnipe .... Deathcycle .... A story where we have a cycle but not the one we expect.

@Victoria Silverwolf .... The Start of a New Era .... What's a new life to do anyway?

@Provincial .... First Contact - Nostromo style .... Revenge makes for a fearful beginning.

@AnRoinnUltra .... A land for no story to take place in .... Is there really no story?

@Yozh .... Memorable Weather .... A writer must have something dependable to fall back upon.

@THX1138 .... Initium Novum .... To begin anew, one must begin at the beginning.

@Culhwch .... So How Does The Sequel Start? .... Maybe what seems new isn't what it seems.

@BigJ .... Intellectually Robust Information System .... Every great movement starts with the same word.

@Astro Pen .... Descartes Redux .... It's always interesting when a maxim is flipped but still seems true.
