Best Cult Films Ever

I think there is a thin line between a film being thought of as "cult" and that not many/enough people have had a chance to watch it.
One film I would say has the potential to become cult if a few more people saw it is Rare Exports.
Probably my favourite Christmas movie.

I love Scanners and all the sequels.

Yes, there were four sequels that few people ever saw. :D

I never really understood what "Cult" is, or what elevates something to cult status.
I've never really understood it either. I think that maybe it's a movie that had a poor reception upon initial release but, after a period of time, gains a following of movie viewers who appreciate it more or perhaps understand it more than when it was first received.

Here is an example of two extremes being at absolutely opposite ends of the cult spectrum. The first anime movie I saw was Akira on VHS, I have watched a lot of anime since then. Akira has done everything, been everywhere, credited with just about everything. You don't need 4K 10,000 colors super sharp video to get the full impact of the show because it is an all out assault on your senses. I haven't seen it in years though it is still incredibly popular. It comes across as manufactured reality. Maybe too wildly popular to be cult.

I read Akira in the original graphic novel before seeing the movie, which changed the ending quite a bit. The art that spawned a thousand imitations.
Totoro is one of my all time favourite films

I consider Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) to be a classic as it has a message (even tho well understood by many) that should be shown to every politician every 4 years. Given the current events in Ukraine & Gaza and the reopening of UFO study by NASA & the USAF into the "Tic-Tac" phenomena, I think it would be a good move.

Its been a long time since I read the book but I do remember the twist at the end that the film missed out.

Logan's Run counts as a cult film I think.

Has enough unique concepts and quotable lines

Plankton! Sea greens! And protein from the sea!

I am surprised they have not remade it or done a sequel.
Everyone has heard of it.

Westworld was done--it seems like the next contender for a remake. An underwhelming remake.
