Bernard Hill has died, aged 79.

Probably his best-known parts included Yosser Hughes, his breakthrough role in Boys from the Blackstuff, and Captain Edward Smith in Titanic, but I suspect he'll always be remembered here for his portrayal of Théoden, King of Rohan in the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy.

"A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises! Ride now!... Ride now!... Ride! Ride to ruin and the world's ending! Forth, Eorlingas!"

“For he was a gentle heart and a great king and kept his oaths; and he rose out of the shadows to a last fair morning.”

I've seen his work over many years and he never disappointed.

My family had just been rewatching Lord of the Rings and we finished the last part of Return of the King last night.

I have always thought of Bernard Hill as Théoden king.

Rest in peace

I didn't even need to see his picture--there aren't many character actors around after 2000 who were being used often in big features--especially sword and sorcery. I knew who he was when it was mentioned he was in The Scorpion King.

He's like Freddie Jones crossed with Michael Gambon.
