I know there’s a whole genre of books relating to magic in modern times. I consider myself fairly well read, I’m looking for input from other readers has anyone read any books about the character getting magical powers later in life in modern times and using their knowledge of science and technology to help them? For example there are books that discuss the ability to create things out of thin air, but the law of conservation of matter would make that impossible. So not only would the character be aided by their knowledge of science but they would also be constrained by the laws of physics.

Day of the Giants 1959 novel by Lester Del Rey is fantasy novel in which modern man Lief Severnsom uses his modern knowledge to help the Norse Gods in their battle with the Frost Giants . Thats about closet thing that I can think of in terms of what your looking for .

Oh good, we’ve learned a lot since 1959. The reason for my question is that I’m fiddling around with the idea of a book that revolves around a character who’s just a mundane human with a love for sci-fi and fantasy and always imagined themselves having the abilities like that. Then, as yet undetermined, they wake up with the abilities from the books they’ve read. Not all of them of course but some choice ones from my favorite series. I was hoping that idea was at least somewhat original.

The Dancing Gods series by Jack Chalker
And the Devil will Drag You Under by Jack Chalker
Empire of the East by Fred Saberhagen
Split Infinity by Pier Anthony and his Zanth series
The Darwaith and Silone Mage series by Barbara Hambly

Would any of these fit what you're looking for ?

Michael Moorcocks Eternal Champion series.

You also might ant ot look the books and stories of Abraham Merritt .

I will check them out and see if my idea is too unoriginal. I’m hoping to be at least moderately unique in my story telling.

These books may not completely fit your criteria . But some aspects of them might.

This is not an easy question. :)

I’m actually hoping they don’t fit too well. I’m hoping that my idea is a little bit original at least.
