Recommend a book for me

Lest Darkness Fall by L Spargue De Camp Mild mannered 20th century historian Martin Padwasy is visiting Rome and while walking down the street he get hist with a bolt of lighting . The good news is that he's still alive and still in the city Rome , the bad news is he's now in 6th century Rome, :D

I did list previously but forgot to put the author name. :)

I cannot recommend just A book, compulsive overachiever that I am. And it may be 6 or 9 books. Who's counting?Don't blame me it is Charles Stross' fault. Or maybe his publisher's. The OP mentioned Stross so I figured he needed to be flooded out.

The Merchant Princes series by Charles Stross

Originally it was 9 books but the first 6 got repackaged as 3.

It starts off looking like a portal fantasy using a magical pendant but Stross decided to double cross his publisher and turn it into science fiction using genetically engineered quantum physics. I don't know what kind of cat fight that created but I have read it 3 times.
