Keyboard suddenly gone haywire

I have a much-loved but rather ancient IBM-style Cherry mechanical keyboard which has suddenly developed some strange behaviour. Out of nowhere (i.e. no spills or anything), it seems to think that pressing *either* control key is also pressing a function key (usually F2 or F9) or even the Num Lock key. The fact that it's either of the CTRL keys suggests it's not just a case of cleaning (which I've tried anyway). Before I splash £130 on a replacement (because I really do love the keystroke feel for writing) can anyone suggest any remedial action or what might have happened?

Have you tried a reset?
Generally keyboards can be reset

  1. Unplug your keyboard.
  2. With the keyboard unplugged, hold down the ESC key.
  3. While holding down the ESC key, plug the keyboard back into your computer.
  4. After about 5 seconds, release the ESC key. You will see the keyboard lighting flash if the reset is successful.
BUT This from Google:
How do I reset my Cherry keyboard?

Hold the keys [D], [J] and [RGUI] (right Windows key) and, at the same time, connect the keyboard to the endpoint. When the reset has been successful, all LEDs flash for about 1 second. After that, the keyboard starts normally, and the certificate store is emptied. The keyboard can be personalized again.

I assume by "endpoint" they mean disconnect from computer then reconnect

Also does your keyboard have a battery? If so, may need to be replaced.

Wow. Just how many hands / fingers does one require for that key combination and connecting a cable?

Have you tried plugging your keyboard into something else. It may not be the keyboard that is causing the issues, but the thing itvis plugged into.

If you hurry, there is ONE

Logitech G G213 Prodigy Gaming Keyboard

available on Amazon UK with scratches for £27.07
I've bought many items from their "used/damaged" items with no problems.

Yes, I tried it in my laptop -- same issues.

Ah.. definitely a problem with your keyboard. Quite possible that age has corroded the electrics.

Personally, I would take it apart and give it a clean on the off chance it might start to work. It sounds like you have nothing to lose.

Thanks, but I really only want the same as I had. It's a perfect writing keyboard.

has it a battery by any chance ? Probably not. Tried banging it on the floor a few times ? One of those tiny pinhole reset buttons on the back ?
