Some samples of tungsten ore were around at the time and its physical properties might have proved interesting to check out. Unfortunately the lab was knocked down and only by examining traces found on equipment suspected to have belonged to Tycho Brahe can we know what he was up to. There was a measurable amount of gold found in his body. He spent his lab time trying to make medicines for real medical conditions.
Tycho's lab was uniquely designed, containing 16 furnaces for heating, producing ash and distilling, with copper pipes that ran outdoors for cooling. A spiral staircase led up to the family living room, called the Winter Room, so Brahe was never far from his experiments.
