I remember reading a story about a guy who is riding a motorcycle when he is struck by lightning. When he wakes up, I think he was in the same town/region but it seems abandoned. His bike won's start so he goes wandering to find help (what could go wrong with that?). Does he meet flesh-eating zombies? Yup.
In the end, he winds up fixing his bike by using cigarette package foil on his sparkplugs, and of course he gets struck by lightning again which brings him back to the right time/place.
It might have been in Reader's Digest, or one of the sci-fi anthology magazines.
