Fantasy+pirates

There are pirates in Scott Lynch's Red Seas Under Red Skies, and they occupy a good bit of the book, though they don't form part of the main plot, and it's the second in the series, so you might want to read The Lies of Locke Lamora (no pirates in that, from memory) first in order to understand some of it.

I'm trying to recall another fantasy I've read which has pirates, but while I'm waiting for my brain cells to kick into gear, I'll move this over to Book Discussion since you're wanting recommendations, not looking for a specific previously-read-now-title-forgotten book, which is what Book Search is for.

Got it! The Liveship Traders series by Robin Hobb (*hits head on laptop as I read all three only last month and still couldn't bring them to mind before posting the above*) -- though there are a lot of other things happening, not all aboard ship, the pirates and their storyline form a good quarter or third of the plot over the three books

On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers
Black Vulmea's Vengeance by Robert E Howard

1. Cormac Art by Robert E Howard
2. The Mists of Doom by Andrew Offutt
3. The Tower of Death by Andrew Offutt
4. When Deathbirds Fly by Andrew Offutt
5. The Sword of Gael by Andrew Offutt
6. The Undying Wizard by Andrew Offutt
7. The Sign of the Moonbeam by Andrew Offutt

Howard began that series and Oufutt. and John Traylor continued it .

I read The Pyrates by George MacDonald Fraser as a teenager, but my distant memory is of not liking it very much.
Neal Stephenson's The Baroque Cycle has a lot of pirates in it, but those are hefty tomes with a lot else in too. I do recommend them if you have the time.

You've obviously read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stephenson?

There are pirates in Victoria Schwab's "Shades of Magic" series. One of the main characters becomes a pirate captain.

I read Chimeras of Estmer by Heather Marsh this summer, and there was mention of pirates. But the pirate theme was only a small part of a larger plot. So I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Anyway, these pirates had really funny living ships possessed by spirits of fast horses. As I understood it, they looked like Viking drakkars, but the figures on the rostrums were horse heads instead of dragons. And they could neigh like horses and had funny names like Roan. Unfortunately the author says very little about these horse ships.

I also highly recommend the Piratica series by Tanith Lee. There are three books:

Piratica: Being a Daring Tale of a Singular Girl's Adventures Upon the High Seas

Piratica II: Return to Parrot Island

Piratica III: The Family Sea.

To be honest, it's something between alternate history and fantasy. But these books are written by a true master.:giggle:

I enjoyed Shannon Chakraborty's The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi about a pirate crew in the 12th Century Indian Ocean.

I also agree with the On Stranger Tides recommendations.
