Sci Fi novel with telepathic sex, furry humans, cats, space dragons, and the birth of a new universe

Can anyone help me identify a novel that I read in the late 1970s or early 1980s that had spaceships and cosmic dragons that gave birth through a dragon egg to a new unvierse that the humans in the ships were able to travel to.

I remember telepathic humans who had a covering of short fur over their bodies who when they had sex with each other and were able to mentally experience the sex from their partner's point of view.

There was a ship's cat that liked to sit in people's laps.

That's all I remember, but there was a lot more in there that made a huge impression on me and I very much would like to find this book.

It kind of has elements of River Of The Dancing Gods but i know thats not it. Sounds like a good read though, would be intrested in reading it though.
