Hey everyone! I’m working on a story and am a bit stuck on how to come up with unique superpowers for my characters. How do you all approach designing superpowers? Do you base them on specific themes or abilities, or do you prefer to think about how they fit into the world and character development first? Any tips or strategies for creating powers that feel fresh and integrated into the story? Thanks!

How about having a person whose superpowers change? So one minute he could have strength, which randomly changes to flexibility/invisibility/x-ray sight etc?

Could be interesting to have a character who enters a building invisible, but suddenly becomes visible, but with super strength and has to fight his way out?

If you’re not talking about aliens on Earth (e.g. Superman), then I’ve always felt a physical superpower should come at the expense of some other ability. Think of it as an individual’s finite ‘life force’ being channelled, focused, into one area of existence.

Such as the ability to repair a bicycle

How about time travelling backwards 5 seconds - or some other time period.

Lamo Man , a superhero who can at will , stop a villain by instantaneously laminating him to the floor. ;)

What about insect control? Or Dance Force? The Dance Force superpower makes enemies start dancing uncontrollably during a fight!:ROFLMAO: just got idea. this can make our story little bit funny.

There's an Episode of Dexters Lab that you might fins of interest Dexter Tries Super Powers I think you find it on YouTube :D also on Dexter Lab look The Blue Falcon and. Major Glory .:D

I think about this sort of thing from time to time.

Is the central problem of the story related directly to the existence of the powers?

Are the powers from the same origin, and is that origin biological/scientific or unknown/magic? Or are the powers' origins individual?

Are the powers possible or impossible?

Do the powers mimic the technology of the world (Star Wars), or are they wildly different from what tech can do?

Do you want to write thrilling, extended scenes of power use, or will power use be more mentioned in passing as just another action a character can take? "Superman destroyed the army." "Wolverine had cut the reactor open."

Just to start you off: -

A BS detector and repellent.
Not being recognised by people/ being easily forgettable.
A Dog poo and litter disintegrator ray.
Being able to detect hidden ingredients in food like onions, sweetcorn, gluten, dairy...
Sending charity huggers and cold callers into the Great Dark Void.
Being able to stop time for 10 seconds or a Rewind.
Weather control - wherever you go it's always warm and sunny - while all around you is cold and rain as usual.
