Is there a good source, library database, etc. for researching specific ship captains.
If there is a general database somewhere that would be awesome.
Specifically I am looking for more information about Captain Thomas Hunt. He is best known for being the captain on the second ship of Captain John Smith's 1614 exploration of New England. John Smith wrote a book about the journey titled A Description of New England. This book goes into great detail regarding the fish and trees but does not describe his ships or crew.
Captain Thomas Hunt is known today for kidnapping 27 natives, including the famous Squanto, and selling them into slavery in Spain during this journey. And that is all the information I can find about him:
1. He was the captain of the second ship on Smiths 1614 journey.
2. He kidnapped natives and sold them in Spain.
3. Squanto was one of those natives.
Obviously he had done enough to be chosen captain in the first place. What? Where? What did he do after this trip?
So, back to the original question. Is there a good resource for finding more information about English ship captains?
Thanks.
