I don't know if anyone here has read The Lord of the Rings in the Ace paperback edition (1965). In Ace's Return of the King, p. 127 has it that the horses of the Rohirrim "belched and swerved away" in fear of the mumakil. Page 148 of my October 1967 Ballantine edition has "blenched" (not "blanched"), which means to "start aside" (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).

Would that be the unauthorised pirated edition, that Ace put out to exploit a copyright loophole, paid no royalties to JRRT on, and that he asked fans not to buy? No wonder that there are typos in it.

And there was an Elf called Legolamb - or was that the Harvard Lampoon edition?
Legolam is indeed in Bored of the Rings.

OT, but many of the spoof names in that book made no sense to me when first I read it at 18. I remember the "Aha!" moment many years later when I saw the name Goodgulf (the book's Gandalf) on a marine fuel pump in some 1960s film. I've never seen it since.

That's the one, but so far I'm finding that the text was almost entirely clean. Btw the appendices are photo-reproduced from the Houghton Mifflin hardcover edition of the time.

The Ace edition is a convenient way to get hold of the text of the first edition of LotR without paying a lot. Or at least it used to be a convenient way to get that edition. I checked ebay just now... (rolls eyes).

This is a photo from the set from the Sam Ram's in production film Evil Dead Horsie . A spinoff from his wildly popular movie series.:whistle:

As I recall, the War Merinos of Roi-Tan were more prone to farting than belching.

Well, yes, one problem with Bored of the Rings was the many references to erstwhile U.S. product names and TV ads from the Sixties.

Roi- Tan (Rohan) was a brand of Cigarillo, (or maybe it was chewing tobacco. shrug)
Serutan (Saruman) : a laxative product with the slogan "Nature's spelled backward."
ArrowRoot of Arrowshirt. aka "Stomper" : Arrow was a popular brand of men's dress shirt.
Frito (Frodo) still is a brand of corn based snack Crisp.

I'll be standing by to solve any more mysteries, as they may arise.

The funiest part of Bored of the Rings was the opening .The rest was not very funny and not very good.
