I had always thought that the entire movie "Total Recall" was actually Schwarzenegger's character's dream experience that he paid for. The movie after he sits down for his virtual vacation is exactly what he asked for.

I told the above to a friend and he disagreed, that after he sat down, all the stuff started happening.

So, what's your take? Was the movie after he sat down his virtual vacation or a scifi takeoff that "actually" happened to the character?

I thought that in the 1990 film, that is was deliberately left open to be either. Yes, it was exactly what he had asked for, but he could have already had had some breakdown in the lock that was allowing his old memories to surface. Then he asked for the memories that he had dreamed subconsciously.

I've not seen the 2012 film and although I have read 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,' it was a long time ago, and it is only a short story with little of the stuff added into the film plot, so I don't know how they differ.

Same here... although I did wonder, if real, how that rather small facility was going to produce enough breathable air for that city and that would persist for any length of time, let alone the whole planet.

I've seen the 2012 film and it's eminently forgettable (which is why I can remember little about it, other than: 1) it was all set on Earth; 2) I didn't buy into the gravity elevator itself, let alone the idea that it was used for daily commuting.

I may have read the short story, but I really can't remember.

I assumed it was really happening but all the clues are there that in fact it was a dream and he ended up lobotomized.

For the memory of a lifetime

Rekall

I didn't even question what was happening on screen. Too much was happening away from his perspective for it to be convincingly fabricated.

Great movie though, and far better tjan the remake which was awful.

Was it a dream ans in his head? I just don't think so.

The point is that you never find out.

Anybody seen Inception?

Yeah this, if it was entirely from his PoV I think the argument would have more merit.

As it stands - I think his shooting of the dream doctor (the bead of sweat) is the films way of telling us that the events are real.

I'm sure that one of the characters makes a comment about them being all over Mars underground, and I always got the impression that they were planet wide.

Who knows? This is 2084; it's the future man - anything is possible. Even self driving cars.

What about the scene where Quaid is surrounded by guards and they shoot him--and it turns out to be a hologram.
They were firing in a circle and yet none of them were hit.

"Rekall! Rekall! Rekall! Thinking of going there? Don't. A friend of mine tried one of their 'special offers." Nearly got himself lobotomized. Don't f with your brain pal, it ain't worth it."
