As discussed in a recent Challenge, it's been quite a while since we had an Image Poll for the 300 Worder, so here's your chance to decide what is going to give us inspiration for our stories in January.

As on previous occasions, we've picked four images from which you can choose, and we've tried to have a spread of images to fit SF, fantasy, horror and general indeterminate speculative fiction, though since we can't decide amongst ourselves in the Staff Room which image falls into which category, don't worry if you can't allocate the genres between the images. Just go with it!

To repeat again what I've said before, when we mods choose an image, we look for one which we hope will generate the most entries and the most diversity of stories, so do bear that in mind when voting. Or vote for the one that most appeals to you or which plants an immediate story in your head. The important thing is to vote!

Even if you don't think you'll write a story this quarter, or at this stage none of the images inspire you, do please vote. Then write a story anyway -- we want as many as possible.

This is also a Discussion thread, so do chat here about the images and/or the forthcoming Challenge which will start on 1 January.

The poll will stay open until December 27th at 23:59 GMT so as to give everyone a chance to vote during this busy Christmas period. Do remember, the poll is an open one, so everyone will be able to see who voted and how.

So the images are (and these are the names I've given them for ease of identification, so the photographers bear no responsibility!):

A -- Tripod
B -- Seeds
C -- Blue jellyfish
D -- Temple growth

Interesting pictures. I would have liked to vote on these in a kind of ranked choice style. I would be easy for me to list them from most appealing to least appealing.

Tripods are too much of an SF cliche.
Seeds are politics, (though I don't think enough people are aware yet.)
I've written 2 stories about trees
So the jellyfish gets the job. :)

Well since it's my idea here goes:

A,C,D,B

But all of them are excellent and I think I'd have a story for any of them. ---- Maybe the day before they were due?

I voted not knowing there were actual images. I am somewhat disappointed that the tripod is a building.

It's whatever you want or you are inspired for it to be. Could be a tripod, a building, a stairwell or a device drilling itself to the centre of the Earth.

As I think I've said before, the pictures chosen are always great, but most of them have (at least to me) suggested fantasy rather than science fiction themes.

This time, there is a good split, so I'm choosing A.

Oh, and C looked less like a jellyfish and more like a blue x-ray of Mister Burns' skull.

B (Seeds) for me. It's the only one which isn't physically located anywhere, so it isn't constrained to any particular range of narratives. Is it invasive parasitic growths in a bottled brain? Is it a goldfish tank decoration? A bizarre species of cabbage? A fascinator, perched on the top of a particularly ugly hairdo? The connections inside a quantum computer? Dandelion seeds? The stuffing inside a pillow? The last thing you see before being eaten by a Bactrian camel? The Big Bang? A map of the routes/black holes used by FTL spacecraft? An honest-to-God Bandersnatch? A sample of the newest addictive drug on the black market? Peace In Our Time? Fairies, dancing?
