Joan Carol Dennison Vinge Frenkel
born Baltimore, Maryland, April 2 April 1948
Joan D. Vinge is an American science fiction author, renowned for her Hugo Award-winning novel The Snow Queen and its sequels. She is also noted for her series about a telepath named Cat, as well as her Heaven's Chronicles books. She has also written movie novelisations, mostly for titles appealing to younger readers.
She married the fellow author, Vernor Vinge, and then later the editor, James R. Frenkel. Vinge was severely injured in a car accident in 2002 that left her unable to write. She has recovered sufficiently to write again, but apart from a few movie novelisations she has published very little since.
Some of her works, like The Snow Queen, are fairy tales rewritten in modern SFF terms. Vinge has found success with her short fiction, many of which deal with human-alien communication, and with her young adult books, including Psion, Catspaw, and Dreamfall. She is another author who makes a regular appearance in our SFF Chronicles Book Search forum indicating that her books are some of those best remembered from childhoods.
