Clive Barker

born Liverpool, England: 5 October 1952

Clive Barker is an English author, film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, playwright, painter, illustrator, game producer, and visual artist. He writes books, and short stories, plays and comic books within the horror and fantasy genres. His fiction has been adapted into films, some of which he wrote and directed himself.

He first came to prominence in the mid-1980s with a series of short stories, collected in the Books of Blood 1-6 and the novel The Damnation Game (1985). He combined modern-day fantasy and urban fantasy with elements of horror in his novels, Weaveworld (1987), The Great and Secret Show (1989), Imajica (1991) and Sacrament (1996).

His novella The Hellbound Heart (1986) was the basis for the film Hellraiser (1987) and his short story The Forbidden, from his Books of Blood, provided the basis for the film Candyman (1992) and its three sequels.

The Hellraiser film achieved a cult status, has turned into a multimedia franchise. Although Barker lost control over it, he managed to regain control since 2020.

His works have themes of despair and suffering, and feature worlds hidden within alternate dimensions our own. They have heavily flawed protagonists, who often suffer physical transformations, and they often express feminist and environmental views.

As a visual artist, he often illustrates his own books.

A list of his works is to be found here: Summary Bibliography: Clive Barker

Books of Blood and The Hellbound Heart are superb; some of the best horror that I've ever read. Les Edwards illustrated a comic-book adaptation of "Rawhead Rex" from the Books of Blood - it's very good but very gory.

Clive Barker is my favourite author. Not so much for novels in the last 20 years, but before that he wrote some magnificent work. His imagination is fantastic. His work very much crosses between fantasy and horror. Galilee is another great read.

He also has a couple of series that he hasn't finished. He does plays and other works too. He stopped doing convention appearances last year to better focus on writing. Will be interesting if he progresses the "Books of the Art" and "The Books of the Arabat" further.

Weaveworld is one of my favourite books. Very vivid and beautifully written in my opinion.

I read a few of his novels in the 90's which i enjoyed a lot. The Great and Secret Show is the one that i remember best.

The Hellraiser movie was pretty horrific and i am old enough to have gone to see it at the pictures.
