Diana Wynne Jones

born London, England: 16 August 1934
died Bristol, England: 26 March 2011

Diana Wynne Jones was a British novelist, poet, academic, literary critic, and short story writer. She mostly wrote fantasy and speculative fiction for children and young adults, but also wrote adult science fiction, speculative fiction and comic fantasy.

She began her writing career as a playwright, with three plays produced in London 1967-1970. Her first published book was a humorous novel for adults, Changeover (1970).

Her best known works are probably the Chrestomanci series, beginning with Charmed Life (1977); the Dalemark series, beginning with Cart and Cwidder (1975); the three Howl’s Castle series, beginning with Howl’s Moving Castle (1986); Dark Lord of Derkholm (1998), and the essay, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland (2006).

Jones's work often explores themes of time travel and parallel or multiple universes.

After her death, The Islands of Chaldea and Vile Visitors were published posthumously.

Brilliant writer. Engaging, funny, and gives her younger readers credit for their ability to understand her characters. The adults and some of the children in her stories are frequently really spiteful, and everyone has properly human faults which makes them interesting and fun.
The Chrestomancy and Howell books were favourites of my kids, but can be read at any age.
