Jeff Noon

born Lancashire, England: 24 November 1957

Jeff Noon is an author of speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, surrealism, cyberpunk, horror), in novels and short stories. He is also a playwright, screenwriter, musician and painter.

His works make use of wordplay and bizarre and weird fantasy, and many are set within the city of Manchester.

He is probably best known for his Vurt series, of Vurt (1993), Pollen (1995), Automated Alice (1996) and Nymphomation (1997) and concern the struggle between alternate realities and of a drug which shifts users between worlds.

His Henry Hobbes series, beginning with Slow Motion Ghosts (2019), are police thrillers where the crimes have occult implications, and they are less fantastic.

The Chronicles of Ludwich series, beginning with Gogmagog (2024) (co-written with Steve Beard) are a wacky quest into a fantasyland.

A list of his works is to be found here: Summary Bibliography: Jeff Noon

Vurt is superb. Just a bit off the wall - worth persevering to tune into the rhythm of the novel. Pollen and Nymphomation are also very good. Not so keen on Automated Alice.

I have not read any of his subsequent works. I will check them out.

Same here, except that I have also read Slow Motion Ghosts, which I did like, but hadn't realised it was part of a series. I thought that he must have stopped writing novels (he also writes plays and music), but I have heard of those recent collaborations with Steve Beard, and I did see the novels Gogmagog and Ludluda in a book shop (only published last year). I think I probably should take a look at those.
