Mercedes Ritchie Lackey

born Chicago, Illinois: 24 June 1950

Mercedes Lackey is an American author of fantasy novels, short stories, poems and songs. Lackey has published over 140 books and is possibly one of the most prolific science fiction and fantasy writers of all time.

She first began publishing work in science fiction fanzines and as Filk music.

Her first published story sale was probably short fiction within the Marion Zimmer Bradley Darkover universe, beginning with A Different Kind of Courage (1985).

She is best known for her interlinked Valdemar novels and trilogies, beginning with After Midnight (1988), which are set in the world of Velgarth, around the country of Valdemar, focusing on the interaction between humans and non-humans across various cultures.

She is also known for her Bedlam's Bard / Elves on the Road books, starting with Knight of Ghosts and Shadows (1990), set in a world similar to Earth but inhabited secretly by elves, mages, vampires, and mythical beings, and they revolve around a young man who can perform magic through music. The SERRAted Edge books feature racing car driving elves, while the Diana Tregarde thrillers about a Wiccan who fights evil.

Additionally, she has published several Bardic Voices Universe novels and reworked well-known fairy tales set in a mid-19th to early 20th century setting where magic exists but remains hidden from the ordinary world. These novels address topics such as ecology, social class, and gender roles.

She is another of the authors whose work has frequently appeared in the queries in our SFF Chronicles Book Search forum.

I enjoyed the SERRAted Edge and Bedlam's Bard series when I was a teenager. I'm not sure how well her novels hold up. The last few re-reads I did of her some of her Fairytale retellings had me giving the books away as I got annoyed at the whiny stream-of-consciousness / internal-dialogue of the main characters. Apparently that didn't annoy me when I was a teenager.

Only book I have read was Joust - which I believe was one of the dragonlance novels. I remember I didn't enjoy it, I finished it but haven't picked up anything from this author since. YMMV.
