book begins with protagonist working as security agent in a universe where humans travel between planets via series of precise jumps where jump must be performed in precise point. some automated ships are performing jump series randomly often getting lost but some discover way between planets that can be inhabited.

plot starts with protagonist doing some police work using dart gun with sedatives. dart needles are tiny and cant do much harm to people. protagonist is transported to a planet where he gets in trouble and his superior shoots him with same darts until he lays still not able to close eyes. his superior shoots darts into protagonist's eyes making him blind.

after that protagonist is placed into a prison camp where he mets scientist who help making glasses that allows to capture signal from other's eyes.

with those glasses protagonist escapes prison camp and gains an advantage by seeing through eyes of people trying to catch him which eventually lets him be free.his goal is to come back to earth so he steals a spaceship and performs a blind jump out of desperation. his companion animal dies in that escape so protagonist is blind on ship. he performs blind jumps and discovers visual signal that he can correlate to space flight making him first one to discover how jumps can be controlled.

books ends with him coming to earth and performing series of jumps across earth orbit to avoid anti space defence and prove a point. then he finally gets attention and he upgrades glasses with cameras that codes signal same way as eyes.

there was a point in a book where protagonist was staying with a woman who used his glasses to see from her cat's perspective when cat mates with other cats.

also i remember that many people were smokers in that universe. and protagonist enjoyed smoking when seeing from eyes of someone who also smoked and tried to precisely time movements to match what he sees.

Sorry, I haven't read this and I can't find it based on looking for stories concerning "glasses" or "cigarette smoking". If others haven't read it, could you supply any further info based upon the questions here: (READ FIRST) Book Search Requests

It would be especially helpful to know if it were a novel or novella, and whether a part of a series or not, and also some approximate date for publication (so if you read it in school, the publishing date must be early than the the date you started that particular school.) It's often helpful if you can remember the book cover.
