With the grand success of the first season of the new Battlestar Galatica series, I am pleased how it played out. The season finale was one of best I've seen in a long time. I must admit that the new Battlestar Galatica tv show is far better than the original version of 1978. Although I appreciate the 1978 version for nostalgia purposes, I am a huge fan of the new 2005 version because the writers approach the familar storyline in a more plausible and realistic fashion. Let's face it, the near annihilation of the human race is a very dark premise and it should not be treated as a sugar-coated hippie attitude like in the original 1978 tv series.
Speaking of the original Galatica, creator Glen A. Larson has made frequent public announcements that he has gone to great lengths to purchase the movie rights, which he does in fact possess. However, Universal does not want to release a motion picture continuation of the original series because they fear it will confuse comtemporary audiences. Plus, the fact that Larson hasn't had a hit in several years makes the possibility of seeing a movie continuation even more unlikely.
Still, there are purist fans who are currently campaigning for a direct DVD movie continuation release. Considering how well the original series did for it's DVD sales (it was part of the top ten), they think it's reasonable enough to produce a Battlestar Galatica movie continuation featuring Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Herb Jefferson Jr. and the rest of the surviving cast members, as well as featuring new characters for a modest budget. They even created a petition link right here:

Personally, I think they are hanging onto a pipe dream. The original Galatica is buried and gone. The tv show had it's chance back in 1978 and failed. Now it's time for Galatica 2005 to shine on our tv screens and have the writers concentrating on making the next few seasons great. Soon, the first season of Galatica 2005 will be released on DVD and this will definitely put the final nail in the coffin on a direct DVD movie continuation of the 1978 version. I think after the new Galatica completes it's proposed five-year run, the producers should team up with Glen Larson and focused on a movie continuation of the 2005 tv series.
