On the way home at Borders I picked up the following from Jeff Vandermeer's recommended list:

Pale Fire - Vladimir Nabokov
The Seperation - Christopher Priest *Winner of the Arthur C Clarke Award and British SF Award
The General In His Labyrinth - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The New York Trilogy - Paul Auster
At-Swim-Two-Birds - Flann O'Brien *New York Times notable book
Possession - A. S. Byatt *Booker Prize Winner

And the post brought...

The Best Of L. Sprague De Camp

Ravenus ... Am curious what you will think about The Historian. It was one of the most intriguing yet most frustrating books I'd read last year.

I'd like to know more about
Science Fiction by The Rivals of H.G. Wells. Am not normally a reader of science fiction but Wells is a writer I really like so am quite curious about the others in the book.

GOLLUM ... I guess you must live in the Australian equivalent of the Tardis then, with all this hauling going on. Three Men In A Boat. Now that has to be one of my all-time favourite classics. I have several editions and in this case I'd definitely go with Montmorency the dog. You'll have to read Three Men on a Blummel next.

Am curious about how you'll like Possession. Am very fond of Byatt's books and the style of writing. Many of the works would fit in nicely on the supernatural fiction shelves.

And you have General In His Labyrinth. Marquez is consistently a pleasure to read. And Pale Fire. People seem to forget he did more than Lolita and this one is a great piece of writing. Nothing like as enticing as Lolita but very good in its own way.

Yesterday I ordered Cat's Cradle and Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said on amazon.

I also wanted to order God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, but they couldn't deliver that until September, despite it saying "in stock". I mean, it says "in stock", so I add it to my shopping basket, but when I look at the summary at the check out, it says that the other two books and the CDs will be shipped within a few days, as they normally do, but this one book will be delivered in early September

Do they have some things in stock on Mars or is this some interesting new defintion of "in stock", which I was previously unaware of?

I've never been anything but happy with amazon until now, so this really annoys me.

Needless to say, I didn't order it. I just don't have that kind of patience. OTOH - This might be a good time to get more into e-books.

EDIT: Just as I expected: I just got an email confirming that the items I have ordered have been shipped, so why such a problem with one book, allegedly in stock?

They don't seem to have it it stock, but thanks for the tip. I'll keep an eye out for when they get it back in stock, but not order it yet, since I tend to get the things I order online shipped to work and I only have less than three weeks left on my current job before starting a new job, so I can't order things, which will arrive after that, yet.

I've heard others speak highly of play.com, though, and I will order a game there, which they have in stock, but amazon doesn't. In this case, amazon did say that it wasn't in stock, so that didn't bother me.

Today from VanDemeer's list I picked up...

The Famished Road - Ben Okri *1991 Booker Prize
Solomon Gurksy Was Here - Mordecai Richler
Geek Love - Katherine Dunn
Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy
Divided Kingdom - Rupert Thomson

Plus.....
The Bloody Chamber and other stories - Angela Carter
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and other stories - Robert Louis Srevenson
Grimus - Salman Rushdie *First novel

GOLLUM ... Grimus is an insane romp. You'll come out of it feeling quite off balance or more off balance than usual. :D Bloody Chamber is good but then again, the lady is always good. They've just published a book of her fairy tales that are quite unlike any other you've read.

Famished Road is also a good read. I just read his Arcadia. Gently surreal. And of course the good doctor and his very different other half are people you really to have visit.

JD ... have fun with the books. Antares wrote Dua Keli Selubang too, only he was Kit Lee then. ;)

Nikitta, there are 5 new copies - below 'Temporarily out of stock' you can see:
Available New & Used from EUR 9.03 (What’s this?)
5 New from EUR 9.03 »
http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/...r-Rosewater/Product.html?ptsl=1&ob=Price&fb=0

it's PlayTrade, the new online trading platform on Play.com. The purchase/payment method, terms & conditions are the same and some prices especially the classics are often cheaper. Anyways for your future reference. Good luck.:)

Ah! I missed that one. Thanks again! I've now ordered that book, the game I wanted and a birthday present for my boyfriend. His birthday is July 18th, so unless they're very slow, it should make it in time.

If they're as good as you say, this will not be the last time I shop with them.

Today I picked up.....

Travels In The Land Of Kubli Khan - Marco Polo *As a counterpoint to Invisible Cities
The Red Badge Of Courage and other stories - Stephen Crane

Yes, I saw those fairy tales but was unsure of whether to get them, now I'll probably purchase that too...Blame it on the cat..:p:p

The post brought me....

Glimpses - Lewis Shiner *This now completes my collection of all World Fantasy Award winners since 1975. Yeh!

I've been buying a bit lately & I cant remember if I've allready posted here, so sorry if I'm doubling up but here's what I've bought over the last month or so: Russel Kirkpatrick's Fire Of Heaven trilogy, Books 1 & 2 of Glenda Larke's Mirrage Makers (I'll get book 3 as soon as its in store), Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern (which includes: Dragonflight, Dragonquest & the White Dragon), Flashspec Volumes 1 & 2, plus a couple of harder to find ones that I'm particularly pleased about: Legends Volume 1 edited by Robert Silverberg & A Dragon Lovers Treasury of the Fantastic edited by Margaret Weis... The last one is such a beautiful book, I havnt read any of it yet but its so nicely presented that I almost dont want to read it, lol...

Heh I know what you're referring to. While Ms. Kostova is entertaining with her historical details but the adventure part is sometimes too Nancy Drew-esque. SHe also has a tendency to tip her hand all too soon and the spook bits are too predictable. I've dropped the book a bit (too busy at work atm and I tend to surf the web a while or watch movies after I reach home late :D)
