Book Hauls!

Imperial Assassin - Mark Robson (This is the first time I've seen any of Mark's books here and this was the only copy of the only title they had. I know they are a part of a series. Could someone tell me if I'm going to be totally lost or is it okay to read this first alone since I don't know if I can find any of the rest)

Hi Nesa, when I bought the Imperial Spy, I asked the same question - http://www.chronicles-network.com/forum/4749-ask-the-author-4.html. I haven't read it yet but if the 1st book can be read as a stand-alone may be the 2nd too? Why not post the question in Mark Robson forum? There's a thread about the Assassin.

Angústia - Graciliano Ramos
On Seeing (Ensaio sobre a cegueira) - José Saramago
Ai de ti, Copacabana - Rubem Braga

If you haven't read Graciliano Ramos or Rubem Braga, I urge you please do. They're among my favorite Brazilian writers.

I'd predict 1 month - the best record of mine. I'd said that many times to myself, but it won't work, trust me.:)

Went to Waterstones to pick up the new Scott Lynch but they didn't have it in stock. Grrr.

So I ended up buying;

Neal Stephenson - Cryptomicon
M. John Harrison - The Centauri Device
George R. R. R. R. R. Martin - A Game of Thrones

All hail the mighty 3 for 2!

All hail the mighty 3 for 2!

Too right! I did the old three for two at Waterstones t'other day (which included the new Scott Lynch book *ducks*). I can't help myself when I see those "3 for 2" stickers, it's like a command, I have buy! :D

Re: Not buying books for long periods of time...
I keep telling myself "No, Hoopy, no more books!" because I have a 2-story high pile of books that still need reading, no more room on my shelves, and also I'll be living on bread and cheese soon! But, as you can see from my frequent updates on this thread, I just cant stop...!

Will do. The Tor doubles series seems a great way to sample new (to me) authors. I decided, against your wise advice, to enter the Moorcock universe through Mother London instead of Legend. It seemed more to my taste.

About not buying books, I already have to exercise a lot of restraint to wait the whole month to order my books all at once to save on shipping (where I usually buy, shipping is $9 for the first book + $4.5 for each extra). I suppose I'm strong. But not enough to stop buying for a while.

You can always try Legend later.

Me i have stopped buying books too atleast for a month or two. I have alot of books in the same series that i need to finish before getting busy with new ones. Reading too many series at the moment.

No, wait, I think I'm mixing it all up. Legend is by Gemmell, not Moorcock, right? Sorry about that. I had asked about the best introduction to both authors in different threads, that's probably where that came from.

OK Borders had a 15% off sale today so I went slightly balistic...

Cat's Cradle - Kurt Vonnegut
Air - Geoff Ryman
The Child Garden - Geoff Ryman *SF Masterwork
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova *Heard so much about this thought I'ld see for myself
Complete Short Fiction - Oscar Wilde
The Watcher and Other Stories - Italo Calvino
The Castle Of Crossed Destinies - Italo Calvino
The Borrible Trilogy (New Edition) - Michael de Larrabeiti
Seeing - Jose Saramago

And last but not least for some Indian myth making...

The Pancatantra - Visnu Sarma
The Mahabharata - R. K. Narayan *Condensed Modern Prose Version
The Ramayana - R. K. Narayan *Condensed Modern Prose Version
