Aurochs -

The European bison (Bison bonasus) having a smaller and higher head than the North American bison. Also called wisent.
 
Italy. Even now some boys in order to preserve their boyish soprano are operated on removing of their testicules. A very nice movie on the topic is Farinelli, il castrato.
 
They say, Ugo Farell is suspected of being a castrato. Now, when the laws protecting privacy are strong we may only suspect of the abpve practices unless one declares it on his own will.
 
Curious. Here, eunuchs are seen as the 'third sex' and have their own godess. One of them even floated a political party on the plank 'you've let men mess up our country, and women mess up our country, it's time to try the third alternative...' (I translate loosely).

IIRC, castration as any form of mutilation (even self-inflicted), is banned by criminal law in Italy.

Yes, true. However, the operation may be made in the country that does not ban this. Don't also forget that operation may be carried out in order to save a man suffering, for example, from cancer of testicules.
 
Only a few things against this theory :
1 - operation must be conducted on boys before their puberty, hence banned in most countries
2 - technical improvement doesn't need such radical surgery - and penal risk - to obtain voice similar to castrati ones.
3 - this type of voice is not fashionable anymore, hence production of castrati is not bankable.

These are all good points. Yet I am sure it is quite easy to have the surgery illegally. I'm sure by now everyone has heard of all of the crazy plastic surgery that is running rampant all over the world and just how low a surgeon (or imposter) will stoop to make a few bucks. In addition, while that type of voice may not be fashionable with wider circles, I'm sure that there are fans in smaller circles who still appreciate that classic sound.

I'm not supportive of the procedure by any means. I'm just saying that these days, there is little that actually surprises me.

The chastity of a eunuch is not to be admired. They can look at the eye candy but they cannot have a nibble
