... and you're an aspiring writer interested in learning more about the business end of things, making some professional contacts, etc., you might be interested in this information my agents Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen just sent to me (although before you get all excited, I should mention that the conference costs $200):
We're writing to clients about an event we're doing next week with two things in mind:
*
* Either you may be interested in coming
*
* Or if you're not interested in coming, you might be kind enough to forward the info to writers you know.
*
*
****Next Tuesday and Wednesday, July 19 and 20, Michael will be moderating*the *6th annual Book Biz 1A: What Writers Need to Know About Publishing,*a two-day conference at Book Passage in Corte Madera
*
****Nine speakers will follow the publishing process from writer to reader. They*will give the attendees an inside look at how*the book business works.*
*
****Sara Nelson, the new Editor-in-Chief of Publishers Weekly and one f the most important people in the industry, will give an overview of the publishing business--where it's been and how it's changing.
This her first trip West.
*
****Jossey Bass Executive Editor Alan Rinzler will talk about editing nonfiction, and*former St. Martin's Press Executive Editor*Diane Higgins will give an editor's point-of-view on editing nonfiction and fiction. Diane will also help Elizabeth critique attendees' fiction.
*
****Mary Mackey will discuss*writing fiction and being a novelist, and Todd Oppenheimer will tell how he makes his living as a journalist and nonfiction author.
*
****Debbie Gisonni, author*and Mark Kerr, editor*will talk about how they met and worked together to get her book "The Goddess of Happiness" acquired, edited and published within a year. Mark Kerr will also speak as a publicist and give the attendees tips on what they should be doing to promote themselves and their books.
*
****Wendy Pearl, a sales rep for Penguin/Putnam, will tell what it's like for her to sell books to bookstores and, again, give tips on what the authors can do to help make that process successful. Bill Petrocelli, owner of Book Passage, will provide*a perspective on bookselling.
*
****We*will talk about "3 Ways to Make Yourself Irresistible to Any Agent or Publisher."
*
****Attendees can get feedback on their books. Novelists and authors of narrative nonfiction*can take "the one-page" test, and nonfiction authors will be able to talk about their idea or proposal. Lunch is included both days. Book Passage, Corte Madera, 415-927-0960. The fee is $200, but attendees enjoy the conference a lot, and get*help that's far more valuable than the tuition.
*
****We would greatly appreciate anything you can do to let other writers know about the conference
*
****Many thanks for your time and your help.
*
Cheers,
*
