Hey - I need help. I recently read magician, and Shadow of a Dark Queen. I'd like to know what other of his books are good!!

The Empire series is the only other very good series he wrote. Most of his other stuff isn't bad, it just isn't great. It was co-written with Janny Wurts. You may want to finish the Riftwar Saga, because that was good as well:

Silverthorn
Darkness at Sethanon

Daughter of the Empire
Servant of the Empire
Mistress of the Empire

Now I didn't like Empire Series at all!

My favourites were Riftwar:Serpentwar
Legacy

and Conclave of Shadows.

The Rage of a Demon King I really enjoyed, also Shards of a Broken Crown.

The Riftwar and Empire stuff were good. Riftwar (the two Magician books, Silverthorn and Darkness) sets the stage for Feist's world. Jimmy, Arutha, Pug/Melamber, Amos Trask, and Mara are all good characters, even though they are all very familiar archetypes. I really liked the low magic presence in Midkemia versus other places.

But Feist eventually runs into the same problem, imo, that Eddings and all other serial writers run into... repetition in the same arena destroys credibility. I mean, I thought Arutha and Pug destroyed the ultimate evil in the Riftwar, and now there are four more series where the heroes will defeat the ultimate evil in the same world? Come on!

So my advice to the OP is to read the Riftwar for Western fantasy, the Empire for Eastern fantasy, or both... and then stop.

His Riftwar series I felt was his best. I've tried the others and can't seem to enjoy them anyway as much.

However, if I was to chose I would say Conclave of Shadows is the next best series he's written :)

Having read them all, I don't think there is a duff one anongst them...

Did you go straight from Magician to Shadow of a Dark Queen??? No reading of the books in between???

You need to read the ones in between too... And the ones later than SotDQ...

The Krondor books were terrible - steer well clear. The books following Magician and Dark Queen were pretty good, as were Prince of the Blood and The Other One Whose Title I Can't Remember. Will get back to you on that one. Legends of the Riftwar were slightly better than the Krondor series, but not by much...

You talking about The Kings Buccaneer???

Read that list that Brian mentions above... :D

Legends of the Riftwar are really good...

I knew you'd jump in and save me the trouble, TM.

I don't know about 'really good', but the injection of fresh talent helped arrest the slide momentarily. I must give the newer ones a go to see if old Ray has improved any, or if he's still writing fantasy-by-numbers. [Let's see, elf goes here, magician goes there, they save the world nine times... Honey, call the publishers, I'm done!]

I'm not saying that it's a necessarily bad thing. Sometimes all you want is simple, mindless fun. Feist did introduce me to fantasy, after all, so I can't be too harsh. But it's not the most earth-shatteringly original work, either. I'd call it entry-level fantasy at best. And if it gets people to read and explore more fantasy, like it did me, more power to him.

I'm not saying (and I dare to presume to speak for Culhwch, too) that they are horrible on their own, but having read Feist's earlier stuff his later works appear very formulaic.

Read them all, start with the Riftwar, then maybe the Empire series co-writing with Wurts, then Princes of the Blood,Kings Bucaneer,The Serpentwar Saga,Conclave of Shadows. The Krondor books read any time you find your self missing Jimmy and Aurthra;)

here are some i really enjoyed:

magician
silverthorn
a darkness at sethnon

prince of the blood
the kings buccaneer

shadow of a dark queen
rise of a merchant prince
rage of a demon king
shards of a broken crown

Krondor:the betrayal
Krondor:the assassins
Krondor:tear of the gods

i tried to put them in order hope that helps:)

i know there are more i just cant remember them at this moment in time..

For me the Empire series and original Magician were the best works, the Krondor series basically the worst and everything else in between or after good but nothing outstanding.:D

Magician, in my opinion is the best book he ever wrote, but they are all great so read them all and enjoy!

I loved magician but have only read the first 2 of the krondor series. The betrayal was quite poor in comparrison to magician but assassins was better
