Possible spoilers.

I'm a third of the way through 'Deadhouse Gates' and everything about this girl Felisin really annoys me. Is it just me? Sheeesh, she is so ungrateful: time and again Heb and Baud have saved her, helped her, fed and watered her, protected her... Why? Oh Why? Mr Erikson is managing to rile me, sure enough, but I would have had Felisin dispensed with - presto - anywhere, but most of all in Skullcup. It's not that she's nasty, it's not that she even does anything but sit about on her plump backside: but such ingratitude after months and months of time with two seemingly decent beings, the ex-priest and so-called thug, I just don't get it. I dislike her so much. Can't think of any other character (any book) that annoyed me so simply. I just wish Heboric had left her to the flies way back in Unta.... Phew, glad I yanked the comb through that knot in me beard! Grrr, Felisin.. grrr... you little oh so immature.. grrr. And there I was having high hopes, since she (Felisin) was Captain Paran's (Galoes?) favourite little sister... Why? She's so snide!
Apologies for the gripe, I'm just trying to figure things out.
Hg.

Yeah, Felisin is a bitch. It's not surprising that most people don't like her.

And Paran is a gimp. He's a whiny little gimp, and he doesn't become remotely interesting until the last third of MoI.

I suppose it's mark of a well written that readers can feel so strongly about characters :)

I'm still undecided as to whether to read anymore! So many readers are saying that Book 3 is THE BEST. There were a number of characters in the first 2 books that I found very irritating, probably intentionally so.
A TV show that I watched had a really nasty character in it. So when the actor came to Australia in a 'play' at the theatre - I refused to go!! Anybody but him!!

Felisin is STILL alive and kicking (more like stamping her petty feet). Havent really found out why yet - how could she be used against her sister, hmmm?!? Now the little brat has told Baudin to go away or (Warren's Forbid!!!) she's going to KILL him. Argh, wouldn't want that now!!! Come ON, Baudin: tie her up, gag her, stick her in a dragonhide sack and drag her wherever you intend to go. I wont complain. (Edit: preferable along the bumpiest of bumpy roads!)

Peeps, don't stop reading - there is always hope that the 'lass' will get her come-uppance...

Being sold into slavery by your own sister and having to whore yourself to a man you do not love so as to survive would tend to warp you, wouldn't it? Felisin has been through some harsh stuff for a young girl, and it's hardly surprising it's made her equally harsh.

C'MON mate take the plunge on book 3 and then tell me if you're still in doubt of this guy's genius... :D

Oh, she is a brilliantly written character, no doubt. I'm sure Erikson wrote her to be as annoying as she is, and it worked. You can easily see the reasons why she became what she is. I still hate her though;)

Don't forget that Felisin was also a noble sold into slavery and having to whore herself = that makes it even worse, so she has a natural arrogance and lack of gratitude. But I think Felisin is a really well-written character, and very realistic, which would probably not be true if she wasn't so annoying. Felisin is annoying because she's realistic - which I think is far better than someone being annoying because they're unrealistic.

Just decided to drag this thread from the murky depths because I was about to make a new thread about Felisin but did a quick search and found someone had already said it for me! I'm also just reading through Deadhouse Gates and my gods, do I want to hit her. Everything she says is some kind of sneering comment. I know she's been through a lot, but she does not have to be petty in every - single - bloody - thing - she - says! Stupid girl, I wish Heboric or Baudin would just put her in her place or leave her on a rock somewhere or just something to give her a mental slap around the face.

But yeah, some fine characterisation by Erikson. Sometimes you can't just like every character; variety is the spice of life  But I still just want to hit the wench.

Felisin seems even more aggravating than Sansa, Ce'Nedra and Eilonwy put together.

Just wait until you meet the Myhbe in the next book. She likes to whine to herself in italics. I call it Catelyn Syndrome.

I actually ended up liking Felisin. I don't think I ever disliked her. She's so over-the-top with her nastiness that I couldn't help but find her funny. Just about everything she said made me chuckle. She also doesn't take herself seriously which goes a long way towards making me like her or any other character. Characters like Elayne (well, any of Jordan's females) or Catelyn actually take themselves seriously that makes me dislike them.

Personally, I feel that Felisin is an emotionally stunted child. Think about it she was what 15 when she was put on the ship. She had no way of growing into an emotionally healthy woman. She was catered to her entire life, then dropped into a world that had nothing but nightmares to offer her. I wish she could have found another way besides spreading her legs, but it gives her a cold hard edge that brings it all together. Quite frankly she is a amazing in the fact that she actually engages you into some form of emotion. The fact that she can is quite astonishing and i do feel that what happens to her is very sad but nice little twist. Still its quite easy to depise that ice cold little slut.
