I picked up one of his, the lamp of the wicked, one of the merily watkins books. i quite enjoyed it, though i did feel it was a bit long and drawn out to little effect. has anyone else read his books?

I once read a review of his Merily Watkins books that said (among other things, none of them complimentary) "imagine 'The Vicar of Dibley' as written by Stephen King." They're not quite that bad but aren't that good either - Some of the characters are seriously annoying. (Merily's daughter needs a good slap, for a start!).

I prefer his older stuff: 'The Man in the Moss' is almost like a modern-day Dennis Wheatley novel with black and white magicians fighting it out in a remote corner of Lancashire and 'December' is simply wonderful - One of the major characters is the ghost of John Lennon!

I really enjoy his work. Initially it was his non Merilly Watkins novels that I read - Man in the Moss, December, etc, but eventually i got into the Watkins novels and enjoyed them. They have a very distinct feel but his concept of spirituality and landscape iws very evocative.
