Glory Road

Ah you see, that's exactly why I find it so unfulfilling :p I'm OCD and I need everything nailed down - otherwise, I spend hours thinking up various possibilities and wondering which of them is the "real" one. It's tough to be me :)

I can see how the ambiguity could be annoying, but for me, I hate that feeling when I finish a book that "that's it, you've got to the end, it's over".
I immediately start to miss the characters. With the open ended books, like GR, the story doesn't end when I stop reading. The characters stay alive in my mind for a while after and I wonder about the things they will do next and the situations they will find themselves in.
Of course this fades as I start reading another book and those characters take precedence.

I guess I'm just not a fan of "and they all lived happily ever after"

...While the male in a relationship should indeed practice responsibility, it's the woman who'll be carrying the outcome around for nine months. Unless she wants the child, it's her responsibility to make sure she doesn't get pregnant... whether that means being on contraceptive pills, making sure he uses prophylactics, or abstinence, etc. Not that that relieves him of doing his part, but he's not the one who's going to be dealing with the physical consequences.

The spankings... that one's a multi-edged thing; broad humor, but also tying into his idea of "there can only be one boss" and it has to be one or the other -- ostensibly, at any rate. ....

On the responsibility ... I strongly agree with the view that the person who has the greatest risk should also assume the greatest responsibility. I have a preteen daughter -- I would hope she never assumes the boy/man is responsible for her not getting pregnant. [And not for many years yet!] It's all to easy for the male to vanish ... though I hope she chooses men who want to be responsible.

As far as the spanking goes, I just assume this was one of RAH's "things".

Strangely enough (or not so strangely :p) I don't even remember the spankings - when I read this thread I was like "Huh? There was spanking in 'Glory Road'?" I guess I will have to go back and read it to see where the spanking came in ...

Heinlein loved his spankings...comes up in many of his works...but then again, who doesn't enjoy a good natured spanking once in a while?

LOL! The ability to defend yourself is commendable. My wife is only 5'1", but is into kickboxing, and I don't envy the person that takes her size for granted. How you and your husband arrange things is your business...I have my own thoughts, but I don't dare get into that! I will say, you may be missing out on something with those spankings!
