the new version was ok but the original was far better

like the avatar tray cthuthlu?

Yes! Not only am I a big Lovecraft fan, the house of Greyjoy from the GRRM novels have as their sigil a great kraken and worship the "drowned god", very cthulhu like. So its very appropriate for me!

I love it.

Dramatic science fiction for grown-ups. I have fond memories of the original, but to be honest it has not ages well and isn't a patch on this new version (I challenge anyone to go watch a few episodes of each side by side and make a case in it's defense!).

It's really encouraging to see more and more great TV being made at the moment.
There's more and more rubbish as well, but the gems floating around in the see of televisual sewerage make it all worthwhile.

I agree with you 100% , When I first heard there redoing BSG, I wasn't all too impressed, besides shiny graphics and high production values, I didn't really have anything to hope for. But ever since the mini series, i've been hooked

The original series is an awful lot of fun though. Your home worlds have been decimated, countless billions dead and the only solution is to flee into space. Where to in the immediate aftermath of the attack? A casino owned by insects that like harp music! It's all clear to me now!

Then we had Lucifer, the Kenneth Williams of Cylons. :)

But agreed. The new series is first rate entertainment that I've been hooked to since I first saw the mini-series.

I really like dark sci fi shows, shows that can get dark without putting you off most of the time (eg Lexx) will be keepers, and I have a feeling that this new incarnation will age pretty well, unlike the origanal show :)
Btw, have you noticed how dark as the second series got....? Loving it XD

I only ever watched Lexx in bits and peices, but you're right. It was good from what I saw. 'Turn that Planet into Granite'. :)

BSG does look like it will age well. I've been watching the second series (just finished watching EP08 'Final Cut') and it's all been of a consistent high standard. The cast is first rate and the story arcs are tight. I also HATE Baltar; which makes for compulsive viewing!

100% agreed on darker Sci-Fi.

im a big fan of the remake - but the origonal... i think allot off ppl have let time get in the way of how...standard it was

I think the original series was very ground breaking in it's time.

There's enough basic "good guys Vs bad guys" stuff going on to entice the standard viewer.

There's also a much deeper side to it in terms of it's philosophy & suggestion that we're all aliens!

Considering it was made 30 years ago, it still seems so fresh now I find it hard to believe.

I think it's such a shame it was not continued with at the time. I feel the series would've gone on to even more breathtaking stories.

War of the Gods & The Living Legend are absolute classics... I think it would've been amazing to see what they'd have done next!

I'm hooked on the new show. The first two seasons were amazing but it's starting to feel like it's collapsing under its own weight in second half of season 3. Also I don't like the stand alone episodes as much but I am hooked and will watch every new episode as soon as it comes out.

The old BSG was great for 7 or 8 year olds but all it really was was a cheap attempt to cash in on Star Wars success. Maybe the pilot and first few episodes were ok but I can't sit through re-watching any of them really. TV has grown up a lot since then.

oh no, now you're gonna make me wanna try again to check it out and try to get past the capes and hair and look for some depth. I jump the gun with inflamitory remarks and then have to backpeddal a bit like it did with Kirk Trek.

Hello, all!

Yes, I love Battlestar:Galactica-the original series, anyway.:)
I liked the new version until they made every effort to jump the shark this past season.
I had some problems with "new" BSG, but I still watched every week. Finally, the series has gotten so soap-operatic (is that a word?) that I couldn't take it anymore!
Say what you will about the original, but I never felt dirty and unsatisfied after watching an episode!:(
So, I have original BSG-the real one to me, on DVD. I enjoy watching it every so often. I'll probably love it 'til the day I die!

Galactica:1980, however...the worst aspects of the original minus most of the cast and the budget of the original...not cool! :p

It seems this classic BSG thread has turned into somewhat of a comparison of the two. It got me thinking why I've enjoyed both so much. Each has it's own merits to be sure, let me start with the original...

Yes it had similarities to Star Wars, but Star Wars had similarities to a lot of serial-type sci-fi in decades past, something Mr. Lucas probably realized when he, or whoever it was, dropped the lawsuit against universal in 1979. Star Wars was not out on 'tape' yet, and I was craving more Sci-fi. When Galactica came out the special effects were outstanding, even if they repeated them often. The story was unique, at least from a sci-fi angle, and it just rocked in my eyes (I still remember the first-run of the pilot, there was a 40 minute interruption from President Carter for an unannouced speech on something, I don't know what, but at least it picked up where it left off). I was 11 when it came out and loved it so much that I felt almost betrayal at Galctica 1980, except of course for Starbuck's return. Maybe that is a bit over the top, but at 12 years old, I knew it was crap.

The interesting thing about the original was the tightness of the family structure. It was a sign of the times, perhaps, our times I mean. Most 70's T.V. has a campy feel to it now. If life has changed since then, is it for the better? The new BSG, in which I'm in awe of, has such bitter family problems in it. Drama overall is so much heavier these days. If I like both versions, I guess I've changed to like such a dramatic entertainment swing also. I know I've grown up and see the reality of life more clearly and it is not as innocent of a view I had back then, but I wish the family unit was not so torn anymore.

The new BSG finds that niche very nicely though, and tells a good story. The new show has capitalized on story continuation, special FX, the acting and actors, music, and the re-imagination wonderfully. I love how they made the humans responsible for creating the Cylons. That makes this whole thing so much more personal. I will always enjoy both with a sense of nostalgia for how they made me feel at the time. I look forward to them doing what the original failed to do, to find that shining planet known as Earth...
